Boston Mayo Association's Titanic Fund Raiser

4,000 miles is a long journey for a weekend, but for the three representatives from the Addergoole Titanic Society and others from the Lahardane area, the five hour flight to Boston on Friday 1st October 2010 was both memorable and worthwhile.

It was the Boston Mayo Association’s Titanic Fund Raiser, a weekend of Irish Titanic history and entertainment. The renowned Annual Dinner Dance had been set aside to assist ATS implement finance its very challenging Titanic Commemorative Plans for April 2012. The association’s annual dance was enhanced with two other events; a talk on the fourteen emigrants who left Addergoole Parish on RMS Titanic for a more prosperous life in America, and Addergoole’s original live American Titanic Wake. The Mayo News of Tuesday October 19th 2010 gave a full page over to the event as follows.

Titanic disaster recalled at Boston Mayo Association’s annual weekend

Members of the Addergoole Titanic Society were delighted to travel to Boston for the county Mayo Association of Boston’s annual dance and cultural weekend, which had a Titanic theme.

“The American Wake”, scene performed at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Sunday afternoon by exiles from the Lahardane area was particularly poignant. The audience was spellbound as they were taken back to the Canavan household on the shores of Lough Conn, as young Pat prepared to leave for the Titanic on 10th April 1912. They looked on in shock and horror as the sad news of Titanic’s sinking and the loss of eleven from the parish of Addergoole in that epic maritime disaster eventually reached Lahardane.

Fr Lohan, whose mother Mary is from Cum, where Bridget Donohue who lost her life was born, read the names of Addergoole’s eleven Titanic victims.

The Addergoole Society was proud to able to be part of the event and wish to say thank you to everyone in Boston for fundraising. Proceeds from all events during the Boston weekend were kindly donated to the Addergoole Titanic Society, who are actively raising funds for the major commemoration plans they have in place for the 100 year anniversary of the ship’s sinking in April 2012.
